Biodegradable Food Bags

Our d2w biodegradable food bags are ideal for keeping meat and leftover ingredients fresher for longer, and provide great protection for food in freezers. We make them using our d2w biodegradable plastic additive. This means under normal landfill conditions they will biodegrade harmlessly into CO2, water, and some biomass at a rapid rate.

Normal plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to fully decompose in landfills. Our biodegradable freezer bags can degrade in a little over 2 years.

How do d2w biodegradable food bags work?

A small amount of pro-degradant mb goes into the manufacturing process. This breaks the molecular chains in the polymer, and at the end of its useful life the product degrades. Bacteria and fungi consume the product after the additive reduces the molecular weight to a level that permits them access to the carbon and hydrogen.

Isn’t recycling better?

Yes. One of the benefits of biodegradable plastic is it’s recyclable as part of a normal plastic waste stream. Yet, if the plastic is not collected it won’t get recycled. It thus needs to degrade instead of accumulating in the environment.

Can biodegradable freezer bags compost?

Our d2w biodegradable freezer bags do not degrade quickly in low temperature “windrow” composting. They will not therefore pass the tests in EN13432 in the timescale specified. They are suitable for “in-vessel” composting at the higher temperatures required by the new EU animal by-products regulations.

Do these food freezer bags contain “heavy metals”?

No. Our d2w food freezer bags contain metal salts, which are trace elements required in the human diet. They should not be confused with toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium. These are never used in biodegradable plastics.

Do biodegradable bags for food leave any harmful residues?

No. d2w biodegradable plastic passes all the usual eco-toxicity tests. These include seed germination, plant growth, and organism survival (daphnia, earthworms) tests carried out under OECD standards.

Are they safe for food contact?

Yes. Our d2w biodegradable food bags pass RAPRA Technology Analytical Laboratories certification as safe for long-term contact with any food type at temperatures up to 40°C according to European regulations. RAPRA is accredited by the United Kingdom accreditation authorities as meeting the requirements of International Standards Organisation norm no.17025. d2w biodegradable plastics are also certified as compliant with FDA requirements in the US.
